She especially enjoys children’s dentistry, and we look forward to her being a key member of the team for many years to come.

Dental Hygienist/Dental Therapist

What is the role of a dental hygienist/ therapist?

A dental hygienist will help you to keep your teeth and gums healthy by giving you advice on toothbrushing and interdental cleaning at home, and by highlighting areas you are not cleaning properly, while removing plaque and tartar build-ups (a scale and polish). They are also qualified to take dental X-rays and help prevent dental decay in children by placing sealants on adult molar teeth and sometimes a fluoride varnish on teeth that may be weakened.
A dental therapist is able to carry out the above treatments and in addition is qualified to extract children’s baby teeth (e.g. for orthodontics) or carry out fillings/ repairs on both adults and children and are able to take dental X-rays.

At Buchanan Dental Care, we encourage prevention. Your dental team will help you by giving advice on cleaning your teeth effectively with a fluoride toothpaste and by cleaning between your teeth with interdental brushes and floss/tape. We will also arrange any necessary in-surgery cleaning appointments to maintain dental health. This is carried out by your dentist or hygienist/therapist and may take a number of appointments. We aim to make all treatment as comfortable so an anaesthetic gel / local anaesthetic may be used in some cases.

Costs will vary depending on how long your treatment takes and how complicated it is. A simple NHS scale and polish is only £10.60 and this is allowed every 3 months. If you require cleaning more frequently, 6-weekly private visits can be arranged for £25/visit. Regular cleaning, both at home and in-surgery, will help you improve your appearance and confidence by maintaining healthy teeth and gums and by keeping your breath fresh.
